Dave Ruder – pilquetoast

released digitally January 28th, 2022

On pilquetoast, Dave Ruder continues his pattern of following up longer LPs with EPs in very different directions. Where 2021’s not Great is orchestrated, acoustic, and vulnerable, pilquetoast is electronic, blunt, and juvenile.

Dave is cooking with drone, repetition, intentionally uncomfortable intonation, digitally altered pitch, and drum programming. Lyrically, things have gotten pretty dumb, in a celebratory way. After trying several times in the past to write a song about a pissing dog, Dave settled on the un-nuanced “piss dog p p p p”. “My Other Car” is slightly above a one-note joke, maybe a 1.5 note joke. EP opener “Blammer Blammer Onion Scrammer” has become a nickname for Dave’s cat George. Dave doesn’t really eat onions, fyi.

This EP does not seek to communicate much of anything, but is a re-centering for Dave on how to structure vocal and electronic sounds. He hopes you enjoy it!
