Super Bolus V

released digitally February 11th, 2022

The Super Bolus is a (mostly) annual celebration by Gold Bolus Recordings of the community that the label documents. Begun in 2016, The Super Bolus is an invitation for anyone who has released music on the label to reinterpret the works of anyone else on the label or to create something new with someone else on the label. The first four Super Boluses were live events in NYC, but in 2022, we’re bringing you the first recorded Super Bolus.

This year’s output is a healthy mix of duo & trio creations from first-time collaborators and reinterpretations spanning the GBR back catalogue. The duo/trio collaborations often span genre and generation in creating something new. The reinterpretations show the versatility the artists & recordings of Gold Bolus and take songs, pieces, and improvisations in wonderfully unexpected directions.

Here’s a deeper dive into each track:

Sugar:
I was thrilled when you got in touch about collaborating. I’d heard your music live and loved it (Piano Vectors and the work for Brooklyn Youth Chorus) and knew you were also a Cage Cunningham-head like me, so I had a good feeling about this. I set a timer on my phone and kept in mind what we had discussed: imagining each other being there, allowing space. For our improv, I played my out-of-tune piano and sang with my loop pedal.

John:
i was also very excited to work with you on a duo collaboration, knowing and loving your piano, toy piano, prepared piano works along with your voice and live electronics. Felt like a perfect fit, and it was! In our initial conversation, we agreed that the plan would be to work independently on our own sonic paths, and we would leave silences which we could imagine being filled by the other, and our doing this for the 14:40 minute total duration. I was working on a new performance patch for Ableton Live and “prepared” viola, using chopsticks and clothespins, so I also just set up the stopwatch and hit “record”. I have to say that after you sent me your tracks, and I brought them together with my track and hit “play”, hearing our two sound worlds together for the first time was nothing short of magical.
