Strand Line: at high tide, debris washes up on the shore

“These works represent a snapshot of my current solo practice. I have lived with Luciano Berio’s iconic Sequenza VIII for over a decade, revisiting it every several years with new ears and a deeper understanding. My interpretation of The Su Song Star Map, a stunning exploration of timbre and form, is informed by close work with Liza Lim. How quiet—at the bottom of the lake, peaks of clouds, was written for me by Ashkan Behzadi, emerging from over a decade of friendship and collaboration. Bridging these works are two improvisations, born not just of influence from Berio, Lim, and Behzadi, but out of the particular moment of my life in which they were created. The months of recording were characterized by opposing extremes, as I grappled with monumental loss and ecstatic potential, anxiety and optimism, grief, joy, and peace. It was exhilarating and exhausting, and this album is a time capsule into which I poured these energies.”
